Competitive gaming - Super Smash Bros. Melee

Discuss.

If anyone needs a glossary of terms, here it is.

  • *air: Airborn attack. See Bair, Dair, Fair, Nair, or Uair.
  • Advanced Edge Guarding: See Edge Guarding. Includes jumping off the stage to attack the opponent to keep them from reaching the edge, as well as grabbing the edge before the opponent can.
  • Air Dodge: Pressing the L or R button while in midair. Using this counts as a third jump.
  • Bair: Backwords midair attack. Executed by holding back and pressing A while off the ground. See *air for other Midair attacks.
  • Counter (move): General name for any attack that deflects a physical or projectile attack, including Marth and Roy's Counter.
  • Counter (character): A character of any tier that trumps another character, despite being at a tier based disadvantage.
  • Counter Happy: Spamming a counter move in an attempt to damage a shffling opponent and break the opponent out of the shffl. See Counter
  • Dair: Downwards midair attack. Executed by holding down and pressing A while airborn. See *air
  • Dair Spike: A Dair Meteor Smash. See Dair and Meteor Smash
  • Dash Grabbing: Grabbing an opponent, then throwing them and dashing to catch them right before they land in order to repeat the sequence. Very annoying.
  • Edge Guarding: staying offensive after an opponent has been launched off the side of a stage in order to guarantee a KO.
  • Fair: Forward midair attack. Executed by holding forward on the control stick and pressing A while in midair.
  • Fast Fall: Pressing down at the apex of a jump. Lowers hang time.
  • L-Cancel: Pressing the L or R button right after executing a midair attack. Extremely hard to pull off.
  • Main: Gamer Slang. Usual character of choice for a player.
  • Meteor Smash: A move that launches an airborne opponent downward.
  • Nair: Neutral Midair Attack. Executed by pressing A while in midair.
  • SHFFL: Short hop, Fair, Fast Fall, L-Cancel. Using this sequence repetitively is called shffling, and can speed up otherwise slow characters like Bowser and Ganondorf. Easily stopped. See the respective individual entries for more information.
  • Short Hop: Tapping the X or Y button as apposed to pressing it normally. Decreases the distance jumped. Useful for Shffling and using *air moves close to the ground.
  • Spam: Abusive or repetitive use of a move or combo.
  • Tech: Recovery move. Executed by pressing L or R when landing from a fall. Gets rid of character lag caused by having to get up after falling. Similar to air recovery from most other side scrolling fighting games.
  • Tier System: A controversial grouping of characters based on performance in tournaments. In every sense, a wager board without the betting. A higher tier character has more of a chance of winning than a lower tier charcter in the same match.
  • Wavedashing: a Short Hop instantly followed by a downward diagonal air dodge. Causes a character to slide across the ground much faster than a normal dash, and can be used to move backwords without jumping.
  • Wavelanding: A downward diagonal air dodge onto a nearby platform. Useful for avoiding an opponent waiting for you to land. Works similar to wavedashing.
