Take a topic on the Nazca lines, for example. We don't know much about them, as we haven't for a long while. What if, let's say, we discover that they all point to something? If the topic was locked before, you would have to post a new topic, which would just cause a bunch of unwanted clutter (one might say spam).

If a topic gets necrobumped, it's easy to find out who did it. And if the post that caused the necrobump fits the topic, then the topic was obviously necrobumped for a reason...
